Boagworld: Design workflows (and maybe a little bit about variable fonts) with Jason Pamental
15 Feb, 2018
I talk with Paul and Leigh about design workflow, tools, and a little side-trip about variable fonts. But mostly it’s a deep dive into different design tools, how to use them together with development methodologies like Agile, and lots of bad jokes.
For centuries, typography has shaped the way we ‘hear’ what we read. In our web work, though, we’ve had to balance our typographic desires with user experience and performance, knowing that every weight, width, or style of a typeface required a different file download. Variable fonts change that, as they include every width, weight, slant, and other permutation of a typeface, all in a single file not much bigger than a regular font file. Now, beautiful web typography can be crafted to respond to screen size, language setting, even ambient light. In a detail-packed talk, Jason will show you not just how far the new capabilities can take us, but how to make use of them right away.
Shoptalk Show #296: Variable Fonts with Jason Pamental
29 Jan, 2018
I had a great time talking to Chris and Dave about variable fonts, responsive typography, and how performance is only a part of the story when learning what variable fonts can add to the design and user experience of a site or application.
Authored for the free Gymnasium platform from Aquent, Responsive Web Design Fundamentals is a hands-on, code-intensive course on how to build high-performance, responsive websites that look great across multiple screen sizes and devices.
Variable fonts are an evolution of the OpenType font specification that enables many different variations of a typeface to be incorporated into a single file, rather than having a separate font file for every width, weight, or style. This article will give you all you need to know to get you started using variable fonts.
Font features or variants refer to different glyphs or character styles contained within an OpenType font. These include things like ligatures (special glyphs that combine characters like ‘fi’ or ‘ffl’), kerning (adjustments to the spacing between specific letterform pairings), fractions, numeral styles, and a number of others. This article provides you with all you need to know about using OpenType font features in CSS for better typography.
